Summer Flowers

Exuberant exclamations of delight when coming back from our trips, I discovered that I hadn't missed some of my favorite flowers in bloom!

The clematis was still blooming, the knockout roses were spectacular, and the peonies, though on their way out with the usual thunderstorm pummeling, made for a pretty in pink perfection!

Soon followed by the liliesdelphinium and gardenia...just lovely!

Most shocking of all was finding a foxglove in the midst of the wildflower border!!
This biannual going strong!  Even after this many years of gardening, the surprises are so fun!

And speaking of unexpected flowers - I was super bummed that I hadn't gotten pansies in the ground in the fall, buuuuuut - happy of happies, they seeded themselves!

Yay, accidental pansies!!!!

            In a variety of colors!!

I'm also very happy that the honeysuckle came back! I wasn't entirely sure how well it would flourish ... or even survive! ... since it's in a pot and underneath the overhang above (meaning it gets little rain in the winter like the watering I give it - or am supposed to give it 😁 - in the summer). But bursting forth in all its fullness it is!

        More glorious color...

Those knockout roses!!!

Unfortunately, when you don't deadhead them (and the leafhoppers yet again have the munchies, so I need to get out my Captain Jack's Deadbug again 😑), the blooms die off and take awhile to return and often not in the original splendor.

Still, a lovely showing for a largely neglected little yard!

(I finally got out a couple of days in between renovation musts and it took me an hour and a half just to weed what you see here! Above is the before and this is the after. Another day was another nearly 2 hours to clean-up the other side of the stairs and into the north side bed a ways in order to eradicate the villainous prickles that had been left untouched for I care not to think how long!)

Certainly is a hodge-podge of this and that, which I hope to streamline into something a bit more cohesive someday. [sigh] "Someday".

Awww, I really love our little house!

Spring!!!!!

Ok, can we say fail?! Pretend like I posted this in April when I actually started writing it, ok?!

Well, we are still under renovation, so gardening has taken a bit of a backseat again. I've only had a few days where I've been able to get out and do some clean-up and planting.

Buuuuut.....

Yes, after a late start, we are finally, fully under way!

The first crocuses popped a few weeks later than normal in the 3rd week of March.

The daffodils shortly after...

The honeysuckle came back!

The row of chives around the stoop foundation is called mole control. They seem to hang out under there, so I thought if I "blocked" their entrance into the beds with a smell they don't like it'll help...?
I'm skeptical, assuming they'll just go under the bulbs, but hey, at this point, it's either this or I get real serious on the poison options :-/

And I didn't trim down the clematis before it started leafing, so I sacrificed some and left others...

And within 3 weeks it looked like this:

And just before we left for vacation at the beginning of May they bloomed!

Beautiful tulips coming alive in mid-April!

But RIP hibiscus that was a total skeleton, so I finally cut it back 😥

Except oh wait, that's apparently what it was waiting for an I'm an idiot! 😄

And happy, happy, happy! The cilantro is back.....aaaand totally consuming the edibles bed.

And look how cutely my pallet is doing!

I planted various types of lettuce in several places, which did splendidly (except for the kale that instantly got eaten by caterpillars again, so I just left it and decided it was the sacrificial crop that kept them off my other nearby plants! 😠) and we enjoyed quite a few salads!

Things coming to life in the wildflower border....

Knockout roses and mazus reptans in bloom with the clematis - such a lovely season!

Aaaaaand then we left the country for 3 weeks! (Well, 10 days, then home for 2, then visiting family for almost a week.)

And still trying to finish up those renos, so gardening stayed on hold by and large.

I'm very thankful for the plants that basically just do their thing with or without me. That was my goal in "planning" - to have mostly perennials that are minimal work.
The nature of a billion beds means the weeding is far from minimal, but good old plants just keep blooming and growing even if I forgot to cut them back and/or fertilize them properly and such.

Perfect! 😁

Even Indoor Plants are Struggling

Well, happy 2019!

The busyness of our life has only increased, not decreased, however, one huge life change is that I actually left my job and am taking some time off, so maybe, just maybe, if weather and pests cooperate, I could have plenty of time to create spectacular gardens! {highly skeptical}

Meanwhile, here's a brief update on the indoor plants...

They're not going well.

Oh, the regular houseplants are fine and, in fact, are only increasing. When I left my job I brought home THREE additional smallish plants plus my large and marvelous fairy garden.

Our house is definitely looking more jungle-like all the time.

But the plants I brought in?

Welp - the avocados were beautiful!

But quickly struggled when I brought them in, especially the largest one.

I had it in a corner and had to move it next to the window after a couple weeks because it was looking really sad.
When I moved it, it lost 80% of its leaves!
Any small new growth that had started shriveled and it is hanging on by a thread.
My only theory on the large one is that it had started forming a ball of roots out of the hole even though I had put it on a tile to avoid it rooting directly into the dirt. It created it's own dirt and root ball that I had to slightly tear up when bringing it inside. Did that do too much damage to it?

No idea, but in any case, it's certainly accidentally dying.
If it survives the winter, I'll put it back out and see if that revives it. If not, I may just plant the darn thing directly into the ground to experiment if it could survive. (I'm sure it all depends on us getting a mild winter and such.)

We shall see.

It may just be a grand, "Thus far shall you go" - or, you know, thus high shall you grow or whatever. I'll accidentally grow avocado trees, get to enjoy their increased growth for 3-4 years, then let them rest in peace in the county compost truck after stealing their pot for the next round.

(It's hiding behind the speckled one that stays inside all the time)

The smaller one has lost a bunch of leaves and was looking sad too, but seems to be stabilizing a bit.

I often feel like the avocado trees are the rough and mangled, scar-faced, weather-worn mountain men who venture into the big city and meet the smooth, polished, sleek and clean ones that have never had to work a day in their life. You can just tell the ones who haven't been outside exposed to weather, leaf rot, and bugs chewing holes!

The other sad bit is the clippings I had.

I only managed to grab 1 or 2 coleus clippings before they died, but thankfully, my former-work-friend / former-garden-partner (so with no shared company and garden plot, now that makes her just my friend...? that seems so short and undescriptive and uncharacteristically not-verbose for me), is as unabashed as I am and she approached her neighbor about stealing some clippings from his coleus, sweet potato vines, and other annuals he uses for groundcover. She watches him clean them up at the end every year and so decided to ask him about grabbing some clippings before he did...he was most obliging!
And she shared some with me!

Into the water jars they went and the roots exploded right away! They were mighty impressive!

In the midst of the busyness, I did finally take time to plant them in dirt.

                                          Colors!!!

And that's when it all went wrong.

This is one where I really do believe it wasn't my fault!
They sat by the door where I always put my seedlings, so other than it being one of the dreariest years ever, it wasn't lack of sunlight.
And I was really regular with watering! They seemed to dry out incredibly quickly, though, so I watered multiple times a week when I noticed them dry.
Not sure what happened, but they slowly shriveled away and now I only have one left! :-(

(The ones at the top left are indoor plant clippings still in water that I needed to replant...so at least they survived!)

But in a happy news, the Christmas cactus bloomed!

Which is funny because I didn't exactly help it along. (Now that I think of it, have I ever? :-/ )

Oh I stopped watering it in the fall with the intention of putting it in a dark room...problem is the "dark room" I usually use is the downstairs guest room which we've moved into while renovating ours. Sooooo...

Weeks later and it was looking real sad and I realized that I wasn't going to be able to give it the attention it would need to bloom, so I started watering it again and that was that.

Then, just in time for Christmas, it popped out a few, slightly sad, but still pretty flowers!

Yay, accidental blooming!

Here's to 2019 being the year of the plant!

I'm not holding my breath.

"Final" Update

Well, gardens - I've kind of been done with you for awhile!
The caterpillars, killer moles (or, I've started to be afraid that I now may have a vole...some of my plants have been decimated 😩), and worst of all: the rain.
In July we had almost 12 inches over our average. About 7 over in September. Overall I've heard numbers of 300% more rain that usual. It's been nuts!

When it wasn't rainy (and sometimes in the 60's!), it was 90 and humid. And the MOSQUITOES!
So I've largely just let the gardens go.

And then we started DIY major house renovations a few weeks ago, so here's your catching up and kind of the "final" garden update of the year through a million photos...

Deck Pots in June...

So much color!

Mid-Summer Flowers...

Gorgeous hibiscus flowers bloomed non-stop!

Enormous calle lilies up front

Gorgeous Four 'o Clocks took off!

Love the Bee's Balm! Unfortunately so do caterpillars :-(

Little burst of Four 'o Clock down near the arbor

Black-eyed Susans!
Shade Garden in July...

The Phlox is spectacular!
But it also started succumbing to either a vicious mole and/or insanely wet soil.

Accidental Cardinal flowers stretching for sun

August Color...

The gorgeous zinnias starting blooming!

And while the diversity in the wildflower garden wasn't as fabulous this year, there were some great colors.

One more little clematis which made me hopeful that more were coming, but alas :-(

In fact, it started looking really sad at the bottom :-/

So many more peppers than I can use!

And the cutest little zucchini you ever saw!

Celosia starting in the front

Honeysuckle is hanging on and the accent flowers around it are looking great!
Beautiful color in the shade garden...so overgrown after rain!

Some of my plants like the lamb's ear up front is looking really sad...again -
moles? vole? rain? caterpillars?  :-(

The avocado as tall as the birdhouse

Elephant ear looking pretty good

Random lone gardenia flower

All summer long a beautiful flower would pop, a little zucchini
would start and then wither away...and repeat.

September's Looking a Little Sadder...but still Color...

Hibiscus bursting even as I am unable to keep up with
de-caterpillaring

Those few hydrangeas hanging strong

A few little guys came out to say hello at the end

The non-producing blackberry bush went feral

Slightly sad pallet, but yay for succulents!!

I decided to help give us more privacy in the backyard, I would plant a new bush.

Figured that smack in the center of where I cleared the grass,
I start digging the hole and there's a giant tree root.
Oooooof course.
Had to move the hole about a foot over and then I was good.

The same kind up front is like 15' tall now (it's a Red-tipped Photinia). However, I realized that with much more shade aaaaaand essentially planting it in a swamp (that's one of the last places in our yard that drains), I may have made a strategic error :-/  But it's been putting out new growth!

Edibles Still Going in September...

Fall crops in: broccoli, brussel spouts, spinach, etc.

Pretty sure the cucumbers are done

Still tons of cherry tomatoes, though!
And little green peppers! Which didn't get bigger than that :-/
Stowaway Cardinal Flower hiding behind the Cannas

An early departure of one of the hostas...again, mole?
vole? overwhelming saturation? my yard hates me?

Um...I really need to find a use for habanero peppers!

Baby zucchini!!

March of the Celosia

Still green and flowering!

October Starts Looking Different...

The jungle. Still baby tomatoes. And mums are in bloom!

My fall crop - skeletonized. So. So. So angry.

The zinnias and cannas are out of control!

Goodbye, cardinal flowers

Hello, enormous elephant ear!

What the overgrown craziness?!

Are you going to fit in my house?

Last color hanging on

Looking a little sad

However, temperatures in the 80's and then sudden overnight drop and we're in the 60's and sunny and suddenly flowers start blooming again!

Hardy geraniums up front peeking out!

Snapdragons made a comeback

One of the only times this dahlia has bloomed since I planted it!

Honeysuckle started putting out new growth

More Accidentals...

I saw this plant/weed growing out of one of the deck pots
and thought, I really need to pull that. It started flowering.
Huh.
Then this little guy popped out. [facepalm]
I planted that little purple the last 2 years...
it apparently reseeded itself and decided to wait until
October a year and a half later to sprout!

This Week...

Can only be described as dying while still in bloom!

Lovely pink Guara bloomed again

Elephant ear out of control

Holy spikey, Batman!

Geranium came to life

Petunia blooming and canna putting out a new leaf...while the rest dies!

Lovely!

The Bee's Balm is putting out its new growth and that
crazy red-leafed annual has gone nuts and is starting to flower!

Zinnia and Canna garden!

Welp - there you have it. There are just no words.

Weirdest - year - EVER!

I intend to rescue the elephant ear bulbs aaaaand that's about the extent of my winter prep / clean-up. Other summer bulbs just get to stay and fend for themselves.
Just let nature take its course and hate myself come spring! 😄
