About the Gardens

We are in Maryland in zone 7a, fairly close to the Chesapeake Bay with about 2" of top soil, incredibly sandy soil beneath and clay below that.

With many trees in the back yard, it is almost entirely shaded. During the spring, the "Edibles Garden" gets almost full sun, but once the large tree in the middle of the yard gets its leaves the yard gets closer to 3-4 hours of morning sunlight.

In the peak of summer the front beds receive about 4 hours of intense afternoon sun. In the spring and fall they are shaded until about 3:00-4:00pm.

The deck, because it's at the 2nd story level, gets full sun most of the day for most of the year. We put a variety of pots on the deck that include perennial bulbs, annuals and herbs.

Almost none of our gardens are situated ideally, so we just make due with what we have, experiment and see what accidentally works!
